Blogging for Confidence #3 - Being a Blogger in Public

Well this Blogging for Confidence post certainly popped up unexpectedly! Yesterday, I planned on going to The Shabby Sheep to do a little yarn shopping for the fall. I brought my camera along because I thought I would do a blog post about it. No sweat, right? Ha. Wrong. I walked inside the  little old house and found myself to be one of three people inside. *Gulp* I imagined my camera sounding like a bolt of lightening with each picture I took in that quiet space. Feeling a little defeated, I shuffled around just looking at the beautiful yarn. Finally I started thinking - if I ever want to be a real-deal-big-time blogger I need to get over my shyness and whip out the camera! So I did just that!

Look at all of the pretty yarn! Doesn't it make you want to drool a little? No? Just me?

Isn't this painting creepy? I snapped a picture of it just for you. ;-)

After browsing around for awhile, I went outside and discovered that the ladies of the Shabby Sheep had yarn bombed one of their trees. I love the vibrant colors. It inspired me more than ever to give yarn bombing a try! Should that be our next blogging for confidence post?

Yesterday was such a victory on the confidence front for so many reasons! Along with taking regular pictures, I even pulled out my Instax camera to take a picture for the 52 Weeks of Instax challenge. Sheesh...and I thought my digital camera was loud....haha.

The only pictures I've taken in public for this blog have been at events, and in that case, I'm usually not the only person toting a camera. Today I was the "lone blogger" without anyone else to hide behind. I even had to awkwardly refer myself as a "blogger" to the woman working at the yarn shop when she asked me why I was taking pictures. For some reason, that felt really weird to say out loud. But I guess it's official now! Look out world. Meredith's a blogger.

*Thanks for all of your feedback on yesterday's post! It looks like it is spilt down the middle in regards to doing this as a group or individually. I think I have an idea! If you also struggle with taking pictures in public, why don't you give this a try for your next post? Use this weekend and next week to tackle your fears and then blog about it! E-mail me your posts and I will compile them into one big group post next Friday! How does that sound?

If you come up with your own ideas, do it, blog about it, and send me your links! I really can't wait to see your challenges!

  1. Loved this post! All that yarn is beautiful! And I know what you mean about being nervous pulling out a camera... I feel the same way! But I am also trying to get over that fear and just do it! :P

  2. That shop looks wonderful! We have one in Tallahassee that is very much like it! I took some pictures in there and felt a little awkward doing so. Something that made me feel more comfortable was asking the owner if it would be okay if I took some pictures for a creative blog I have. She laughed and encouraged me to take as many as my heart desired. I still felt kind of rushed though and my images weren't the best. Maybe I'll try again for a Blogging for Confidence post!

  3. I'm definitely drooling. I love yarn!! My local LYS won't allow me to take pictures of their inventory. That painting is totally creepy.

  4. A-mazing post! I am so so shy and I too get freaked out when it comes to weilding my camera in public. It's not the most discreet camera in the world so it's hard to fly below the radar when taking photos! You are so right though, it's a step that just needs to be taken, I'll be keeping your post (and camera courage) in mind the next time I am out!

  5. I do sometimes feel weird about taking pictures in public. It's the same with shooting a video. People always feel uncomfortable.

  6. well, as a fashion blogger i had to get over being scared of taking pictures in public really quick! haha.. i have been stared at, whistled at, and all the other annoying things nosey people do. ;P
good for you for taking these pictures. i love them..! all the colors of yarn are so beautiful.

  7. It hadn't really occurred to me that I don't usually take photos in public. But not because I'm scared to. Usually I just don't think to bring my big ole' camera. I love the comparison of the camera to lightning. I completely know what you mean. It seems like everyone is looking for the source of the noise.

I'm also going to second what Michele said about asking to take pictures. Only because some store owners don't like it and it is rather mortifying to be told to quit taking pictures. Or even worse, asked to delete photos.

  8. I really like these posts. I find myself not taking a lot of pictures when I'm out at places like that because I don't want to be THAT guy with the random camera. Maybe I should wear a shirt that says "BLOGGER" in really big letters.

Actually, I might really like that. Anyways, lovely photos, as always! So glad we are following each other on Instagram now too!

  9. if i had a fancy legit camera, i don't think i would be shy about it, but taking out a dinky point-n-shoot then telling someone it's for my blog is embarrassing for me. haha.. actually, i'm not quite open to telling everyone IRL that i blog at all.

so glad you went for it! and girl, you ARE a real deal blogger!

  12. I didn't realize that you live in the Dallas area! Me too! I've been wanting to go into the Shabby Sheep for a while now, and now I think I'll make the special trip. :)

I know just what you mean about feeling awkward with the camera in public. I usually have my camera with me, but it never gets used because I get so embarrassed. I'll have to try to overcome that fear, as well.

  13. Just wanted to say that I'm your newest follower :)

I also love your pictures, especially the one with the 3 little sheeps.

  14. Aww, such great photos! I love the vibrant colors in yarn shops- I'm not a photographer but if I were, I'd be snapping pictures left and right! It looks like such a cute shop! I really like that yarn-bombed tree too. I'd love to try that!

P.S. I totally agree on the creepiness level of that painting :)

  15. my question is this: do you request permission to start snapping away first or do you just do it and then explain why later, when you get "the look"?

    I'm a wait-til-nobody-is-looking-then-snap girl myself but it's kind of limiting :)

  16. i found it interesting how you said it felt strange referring to yourself as a blogger.
i usually don't tell anybody myself either. sometimes my husband mentions it to others and i'm almost embarrassed, how strange, since i really love the blog my sister and i share. but i still have just the hardest time telling friends and acquaintances about it, so weird!

  17. Just found your blog and I LOVE it. I need to get better at this myself. I'm so camera shy in a sense that I don't want to be the weirdo snapping pics everywhere. I need to just do it! Love the pictures too - such pretty yarn!

  18. Oh wow, I can totally relate to this...I always feel like someone's going to come down on my head and stop me from taking pictures. :P Guess I need to get over that. Thanks so much for the post! Great inspiration. And yes, that yarn had me drooling too.

  19. Taking pictures for my blog has been, without question, one of my biggest challenges. I'm so self-conscious that I just know I'll "look" (feel) like an idiot pulling out my camera in public. I've been meaning to tackle this and really break in my blogging boots. My brother just bought me a new camera (what a sweet brother!) so I guess this is just the que I've been waiting for. Thanks for talking about your own challenges and for posting about overcoming them! You've really inspired me.

  20. I love this post. Beautiful photos and a sentiment that I think most of us can relate to at some point or another. But this is your space - so fill it the way you want to!

  21. The yarn is beautiful, glad you took some pictures!
Taking pictures in public - and especially in shops - is something I find quite hard, too. I'm always afraid, someone might jump at me yelling "You're not allowed to take pictures inside this building - what are you doing here?" But now that you've shown us how it's been done, I will try harder, too... Thanks for sharing and for being so open about it (because many people only brag with their pictures, but keep it a secret how they felt taking them).

  22. And I felt very alone for thinking this way. Seems quite common. My thing to get over, is being around friends and family who are non-bloggers. They don't get it. But you have some great points about being brave. This post would not have been so lovely without the photos. Beautiful.

  23. What a fantastic blog! I absolutely love it. Don't have much time to read now because am in rush for my classes, but I'm definitely going to come back here in the evening. Feel invited to visit my place - fruttibosco.blogspot.com - not necessarily to read (it's in Polish), but to see what I create. Take care. xoxo frutti.

  24. I have the same problem when it comes to taking pictures in public. I'm always afraid to take out my camera and take pictures. I would love to visit that store! It has a nice old look to it. :)

  25. Hey! I just stumbled upon your blog today and am so happy to have found you! I totally get the whole embarrassed-to-be-the-only-one-with-my-huge-camera-taking-pictures-of-who-knows-what. But way to be brave! You caught some beautiful shots! I'm going to take my camera out this week and not be shy...thanks for the encouragement boost!!

  26. I understand the camera thing you are feeling. When I started taking photos for my facebook 365 project and then for my blog I was feeling self-conscious but the more I did it the more confident I got. Now I take photos everywhere I go...just in case. Good for you for pushing through your fears!!

  27. My friend's mom does yarn bombing and we had a whole graffiti-knitting class at my school! At the Blanton Art Museum here in Austin my school helped yarn bomb 99 trees:) Check out Knitta Please! http://www.knittaplease.com/
    She's great!

  28. I know exactly how you feel, I am always too shy to take photos when I am out and about, especially in shops with beautiful things or at pretty restaurants or settings, I feel too self-conscious and embarrassed! Urgh, it's so silly. I keep telling myself 'you only live once' etc as motivation to stop wasting time caring too much about what complete strangers think of me. I think your series is excellent and I can't wait to read what else you have in store. You've really got my mind ticking on what other little challenges I can set myself to boost my confidence with blogging and being 'a blogger' haha. xxx

  29. I realise I'm a little behind but have only just come across this post whilst checking out your Blogging for Confidence series (love it, btw!)
I totally need to get over my photo fear - I'm always so worried about people wondering what I'm doing, and also what to say say if someone asks me why I'm snapping left, right and centre!
I definitely need to conquer this fear - well done!
