Out of all of the landmarks, museums, bakeries, and generally awesome NYC things I saw last week, I took the most photos inside a yarn shop. That makes perfect sense to me! I mean, I knew Purl Soho would be a magical place but I never expected the explosion of colorful yarn, fabrics, and all-around fiber goodness that awaited me inside. Of course the coolest craft shop would be in Soho, one of my favorite areas in New York. The huge yarn selection lined both walls of the shop, each shelf filled with a color or texture I never knew existed. It is yarn heaven on earth.
I felt a little silly taking so many photos. I was a yarn-obsessed tourist and I definitely let it show. Look at that giant crochet hook! So cool! Haha. Unfortunately (or fortunately...) my tiny carry-on luggage kept me from spending money on bags full of colorful yarn. However, I did recently order some crewel wool from their online shop for the ABC sampler.I love visiting new yarn shops. Entire stores dedicated to crafts are some of my favorite happy places.
Have you ever visited Purl Soho? What is your favorite local yarn shop? Mine is definitely the Shabby Sheep!

This looks wonderful! These colors! I want them! Now! :D:)
ReplyDeletethose colors look amazing oh my gosh *___________*

I love yarn shops too! I would love to spend a whole day in there! Sigh...yes carry on luggage can be a good thing. ;)
ReplyDeleteOh. My. Goodness. That's... beautiful. Just beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI wish I lived closer to the shop, I've known it for quite a while and it must am-az-ing to visit it. Your photos envy me!
ReplyDeleteI am lucky enough to be studying abroad in France along with the Fibers program at my school. Our group spent the week in Paris and found some awesome shops full of fun yarn, craft, colorful related things!
ReplyDeleteGAH! All that ball fringe in one place is making my heart pitter-patter!
ReplyDeleteWow. I think I must visit here! The one shop that I have been to that has the most yarn I have ever seen was Loopy Yarns! There is room after room of colorful yarns of all sorts of colors, fibers, and thicknesses! Especially surprisings is the size considering it is in the middle of Chicago!
ReplyDeleteI probably would have passed out if I went there.
ReplyDeleteI have always wanted to visit Purl Soho! Although, as with many other yarn shops, I'd die from the selection and not being able to decide what to buy lol.
ReplyDeleteI was recently over in the States and was in walking distance to Purl Soho. It was amazing. I had been wanting to knit for quite a while and it was there I bought wool and needles and got everything going. I'm now the proud owner of a pair of fingerless mittens and most of a cabled mug cosy because of it. I'm kind of glad I don't live locally- it could end up expensive!
ReplyDeleteI would be in there for hours if I ever got the chance to visit!! It looks amazing!!!

Oh my! One of my favorite stores by far. I can't wait to visit the brick and mortar store for myself! Looks like a blast. (thanks for all the photos :)
ReplyDeleteYou've been to Mecca! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteOhhhh, I loved visiting Purl Soho when I was in NYC a couple of years ago. Dragged my husband in there. Only wish I had taken more photos (and bought more treasures!), so it's SO lovely to see yours!
ReplyDeleteoooh, I am so jealous lol! Wish there were yarn stores where I live!

Oh, I have always wanted to visit Purl Soho!! Such a neat place, and I love the beautiful displays! xo Heather
ReplyDeleteThose colours are so amazing and vibrant. Yarn like that always reminds me of candy!
ReplyDeleteOh my! WHY did I not know about this when I was in Soho? But yeah, I wouldn't have had any room in my luggage either...
ReplyDeleteOh my, oh my! What a gorgeous looking shop and why, oh why did I not visit when I was recently in NY?!?! Anyway, my favourite yarn shop (actually where I discovered the wonder of knitting!) is Nest (http://www.handmadenest.co.uk/), which is over the other side of the pond in London. It's a wonderful shop, which not only provides beautiful yarn and haberdashery but it also serves scrumptious home made cake and home made mint tea. You can go in and knit, eat cake and drink tea - perfect!

Nest sounds like such a lovely place! Knitting, tea, and cake...what more can you ask for? :) I hope I can visit it one day!
DeleteThanks for these photos - am visiting NY for the first time in a couple of weeks and have heard of Purl Soho but now I know that I definitely have to make a visit :)
ReplyDeletePurl Soho is like a holy site for knitters. The Mecca of yarn shops. So jealous right now.

ReplyDeleteI missed Purl Soho on my last trip to NYC because I didn't have a decent map of the Village! But it looks wonderful! Thanks for sharing the photos. Pam
ReplyDeleteOh I am so glad that you posted this. I am heading to NYC this weekend and my sister in-law and I were joking about what dorks we are that the place we most want to visit in Purl Soho!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, everything is so colorful! The store is decorated beautifully. ^^
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, I don't know how to knit or crochet or do anything involved with yarn other than my elementary school crafts, but I wish I did just so I have a good reason to visit stores like that!

I visited Purl Soho when I went to New York two years ago! I didn't crochet or knit then, but the beautiful fabrics they had there was enough to have me drooling over the contents of the store! I wish we had a local yarn shop near where I live, but the closest is about an hour away from me so most of my yarn shopping is done online.
ReplyDeleteThis is my first time posting a comment! Hiya! I've loved your blog for quite some time now :D
Hi Sanaa! Thank you so much! :)
DeleteI love these photos of Purl SoHo! I go there on a regular basis and have tried to take some photos of the shop itself, but these do the shop justice for sure. Need to go back and try again, they really are an inspiration.
ReplyDeleteI'vebeen to Purl Soho and while I love their website and wonderful patterns and ideas, I was a bit disappointed in the actual store. For the most part, I could get the yarn available at our own LYS in Houston and probably for less (without the NY markup). Still it is a lovely store. The one I did like was Habu Textiles. I posted about my visit on my blog at AgujasBlog.com.
ReplyDeleteSo much amazing color! *drools*

I started frequenting Purl when it was on Sullivan Street as a college student at Barnard - a subway train uptown. I really like their newer space because it combined two pretty teeny shops on Sullivan Street so that you could find everything in one place. I feel like they even added merchandise! I can get some of the same yarn here in Philadelphia (where I live now) but it costs pretty much the same. Purl always has a few things that I don't find elsewhere. I was able to get Swans Island there before my LYS had it. They also always have a ton of Manos and the best cashmeres. They also carry Liberty fabrics (apparently, it's pretty tough to be able to sell them) which I can't get in Philly. They also have different fabrics from what I find at home - like some of their Japanese offerings. I love the line Sajou that they have because they make exquisite items for embroidery and sewing. Don't even get me started on the notions and trims they have. If I need a great deal of trim or buttons, I will go to the fabric district but my projects are usually small. On my last trip I bought some Manos yarn for a cowl, embroidery snips because I was coveting the bird shaped ones, striped flannel for a baby blanket, hand quilting thread, and lots of Liberty prints (I saved a few hundred $$ for these alone!). I always pick a special thing to splurge on when I am there. It was an expensive trip but well worth it as I only go once per year. So glad you got to go!

I would be so completely overwhelmed if I ever had the chance to visit Purl Soho!
ReplyDeleteSurely you could have fit one skein in your luggage? ;)
My favorite yarn store here in Austin is Gauge. It's right in the neighborhood I lived in for two years and the owner is such a sweetheart.
Hopefully I will be able to visit Austin soon! Gauge sounds like a lovely yarn shop.
DeleteI'm so jealous that you got to visit the shop!
