Fiber Inspiration - Artist Maria Aparicio Puentes

I discovered Maria Aparicio Puentes' incredibly inspirational work over the weekend and fell in love. She uses thread to add a new, geometric, and textural element to photographs taken by other people. I am fascinated by the intricacy of her lines and shapes. The visual power of the bright colors against the black and white photos is so eye catching.

Her creations have inspired me to try embroidery on paper. I would love to create a piece of art or unique card with a needle and thread. I mean, it worked when I tried to crochet on paper, right? I guess you have to be extra careful when dealing with delicate paper.

Have you ever embroidered on paper before? I think I will give it a try this weekend!

  1. I bought one of those Sublime Stitching greeting card kits and it was fantastic! It was easy, beautiful, and the recepient of the card always gushed over it. You should definitely give it a try.

  8. Beautiful work! :)

I used embroidery a couple of times for cards. And it worked perfectly well. :) But it was cardboard, so a lot steadier than paper.
    Best regards. :)

  9. i love her work! works so well with each piece, adding alot to it.

I love embroidering on paper or card. i bought a moleskin sketchbook just for the extra thick paper which is sturdy to sew on.

Depends how much detail you are adding :)

  10. These are so beautiful! I love the one of the girl in the train station!

I've tried embroidering on paper before and really liked it. After a few failed attempts (amazingly, paper isn't as forgiving as fabric!), I ended up pre-poking all of the holes through the front of the paper so that I would know where to come up from the back side, maybe that seems obvious but it was a real lightbulb moment for me!
