Now that it is 2013 my mind is already thinking of what new crafts I want to try this year. I hope some of you are thinking about learning to crochet or knit! I recently shared a simple granny square tutorial in Issue 12 of Gathered by Mollie Makes. This granny square is perfect for blankets, scarves, coasters, a gift bag pocket and anything else you can think of! Granny squares are definitely a great way to get started with crochet.
What crafts do you want to tackle this year? Have you started any new projects since Christmas or are you giving yourself a much-needed break for a few weeks?
I hope you are having a great Monday so far!

making a granny square blanket is on my to-do list too! along with making a quilt and upholstering my first sofa! thanks for the tips :)

You're welcome! :)
DeleteI love a good Granny Square. I made both my children a Granny Square blanket for their birthdays, which was the size of a lap blanket but try to add a few more rows as they grow so to does the blanket. It takes almost a full ball of yarn to get round them now, and they're allowed to pick the colours so some are horrid, but they love those blankets so much. I've started on a small Grannys linked together blanket this week, which I may keep for myself :-)

Aw! So sweet. What a great gift Amanda!
DeleteHey Meredith, a week or three ago I discovered your blog and since then I've been obsessed! I've read ALL of your blogs on my teenietiny iPhone screen and I've loved each and every one of it! So thumbs up for you! Thanks to your embroidery blogs I would like to tackle embroidery this year, I've already made a tea towel for a secret santa and I really liked it. I also want to finish my granny stripe blanket, but (same as the huge granny square one) it takes ages! Well, keep up your blog and I would like to see some tutorials from you, as I really like your style :) Bye! Robin (from the Netherlands)
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Robin! Enjoy your crafty adventures this year! :)
DeleteI'm currently crocheting a granny square blanket for a friend. I had some extra yarn so I started using it for a blanket. I didn't have a certain person in mind when I started it but then I realized my friend in CO could use a blanket. Now, I'm almost done. Not nearly the size of the blanket from your previous post.

Thank you Angela!
DeleteI've been spinning yarn for a blanket for awhile now. At first I thought I'd make a granny square blanket. But I think I might have to learn to weave and weave the blanket instead.
ReplyDeleteAnd I like your color choice for that granny square. Are you going to make a whole blanket out of those colors?
I really want to learn how to spin yarn. My local yarn shop is offering classes now so I might have to give it a try!
DeleteI think I will use these colors for the giant blanket. They are some of my favorite colors and I like how they look together.
How did you know? I literally looked up Granny Square pattern this morning. I've always just made it up as I went along, and figured it was time to get a proper pattern.
ReplyDeleteI'm aiming 1 granny square a day in order to have a big lovely blanket by the end of the year. Fingers crossed
*Fingers crossed* :)
DeleteLuckily I already how to knit and crochet but I've never made a granny square before. I've tried to crochet one before but they always come out deformed however I'll keep trying.

DeleteI definitely have a granny square project on the list for this year. Not quite as ambitious as yours though Meredith – but I do love the full bed one from Purl Bee.
ReplyDeleteEven though it's really only for quilters, the other idea I've taken on this year (I'm modifying it so I can complete all my craft projects) is 'a lovely year of finishes'. It's a great idea - check it out here http://blog.sewbittersweetdesigns.com/?page_id=3033
Thanks so much for sharing! Have fun working on your granny square project this year.
DeleteI started a granny square project this year--one square (or more) a day. I'm using the project for Christmas gifts this year as well as for a blanket for myself. It's been a lot of fun playing around with different patters and yarns.
ReplyDeleteI love that idea! You are going to have the best granny square blanket by the end of the year.
DeleteThere are so many beautiful granny square patterns out there- how can one choose! Lovely idea to start off the new year with something simple. Great tutorial!

ReplyDeleteIt will definitely be worth it! :)
DeleteI knit quite a lot of presents for Christmas and Decemeber was a little fraught to say the least!
ReplyDeleteI only picked up my needles again at the weekend and decided to knit a hat for myself that I had been desperate to since I got the Animal Hat book. All finished last night and I love it :)
That's great Nicola. I'm glad you were able to make something for yourself after the busy holiday season! :)
DeleteA giant granny square blanket was the first thing I ever crocheted. It's my favourite still even though now I have colour coordinated and posh patterns!

Thanks Belle! :)
DeleteThis is brilliant! It's surprisingly difficult to find good basic granny square tutorials.
ReplyDeleteI have a lot of projects that I want to do this year. I just finished a granny square market bag. I'm currently crocheting a pair of mittens and I'm about to start knitting a turban hat. This year I also want to crochet a huge chevron blanket. You should definitely make a giant granny square blanket!

Your granny market bag looks so great!
DeleteI'm working on a granny square blanket at the moment. I've got past the first stage of crocheting all of the squares - now it's onto stitching them all together! Granny squares are so straight forward that it's a great way to spend an evening. The giant granny square blanket you shared in your Blush List looks fantastic!

I agree. Granny squares are very relaxing. Putting it all together is a little less relaxing, for me at least. ;) Your squares look beautiful!

I hope you give it a try this year Kati!
DeleteI got a sewing machine for Christmas, so sewing is top of my list right now. I've already completed my first project and it wasn't as scary as I thought it would be. (I've always had a little phobia when it comes to sewing machines.) Now, I have a pretty custom floral skirt... and I'm so proud that I made it myself. :)
ReplyDeleteThat is so awesome Erica! I am a little scared of sewing machines too...haha. I'm glad you gave it a try and now you have a cute skirt! :)
DeleteGranny squares never did anything for me, but this color combi/pattern...i just love it! I may need to give it a try...
